Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain naturally process and heal from traumatic or overwhelming experiences.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to talk through every detail of what happened. Instead, it uses bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, gentle tapping, or sound tones—to activate the brain’s natural processing system.
This approach helps painful memories lose their emotional intensity, so you can respond to life in the present rather than being overwhelmed or triggered by the past.
Why Do Past Experiences Still Affect You Today?
When trauma or distressing events aren’t fully processed, the brain can hold onto them as if the danger is still happening today. These ‘stuck’ memories can cause a wide range of emotional and physical symptoms, including:
- Anxiety, panic attacks, or overthinking
- Flashbacks or nightmares
- Low self-esteem or chronic shame
- Emotional numbness or disconnection
- Muscle tension or physical discomfort
Past trauma can trigger people in the present because the brain sometimes stores distressing experiences in a ‘frozen’ or unprocessed state. When this happens, reminders of the trauma—like a sound, smell, or situation—can make the body react as if the danger is still happening. This can lead to anxiety, panic, emotional overwhelm, or shutdown. EMDR helps the brain safely reprocess these memories, so they no longer control how you feel, think, or react. You remain aware of the past—but no longer feel trapped in it.
‘Hidden’ Trauma
Sometimes, trauma doesn’t look like one big event. It can show up as years of emotional neglect, harsh self-criticism, chronic anxiety, or never feeling good enough. I’ve worked with many clients who logically understand their trauma is over — but emotionally, their body still reacts as if it’s happening now. Unprocessed memories can affect you in many ways:
- Constant anxiety, worry, or overthinking
- Emotional shutdown, numbness, or dissociation
- Low self-worth or people-pleasing
- Panic attacks or chronic tension
- Difficulty setting boundaries or trusting others
- A sense of being “stuck” or unable to move forward
These ‘hidden’ or overlooked traumas affect people because the brain and body are wired to keep us safe. When something feels emotionally overwhelming—like being rejected, shamed, criticised, or constantly walking on eggshells—the nervous system can go into survival mode. If those experiences aren’t fully processed, the brain may store them as ongoing threats. This can shape how we think, feel, and react in everyday life, often without us realising. Over time, unresolved trauma can lead to patterns of anxiety, self-doubt, emotional disconnection, or feeling ‘not good enough.’ EMDR works by helping you reprocess those memories, so they no longer hold power over your present life.
Moving Forward With Confidence
As EMDR therapy progresses, many people notice a powerful shift: they no longer feel stuck, overwhelmed, or emotionally hijacked by the past. The memories lose their emotional grip, creating space for greater calm, resilience, and self-trust. People often begin to reconnect with their inner strengths, reshape their beliefs, and move forward with clarity and confidence.
At ASO Therapy Centre, EMDR is offered with deep compassion and care. Whether you’re healing from trauma, anxiety, grief, or long-standing patterns of emotional pain, EMDR can support your journey to lasting emotional freedom.

Experiencing EMDR
You don’t have to go into graphic detail to begin healing. EMDR allows you to process trauma without being re-traumatised. Sessions are always tailored to your pace and capacity, and can be blended with other approaches like hypno-psychotherapy, inner child work, or parts work for a deeply integrated experience.
Whether you’ve tried therapy before or this is your first step, EMDR can help you shift what’s been stuck for too long.
I offer EMDR therapy online and in-person, with a free 15-minute consultation so you can ask questions and see if it’s the right fit.
